The Move to Amend Coalition is a grassroots campaign to amend the Constitution to state that artificial entities such as corporations, unions, and non-profits do not have inherent rights under the Constitution, and that money is not political speech so campaign spending can be regulated. Move to Amend focuses on movement building and community organizing, emphasizing leadership from communities most impacted by corporate power such as people of color, low-income people, women, LGBTQIA+ people and youth.

Move to Amend is structured to empower grassroots community leaders through affiliate groups and advocates that organize locally for the passage of the We the People Amendment. The coalition’s “We the People Amendment” was introduced in Congress in 2013, 2015, 2017, 2019 and 2021. Representative Pramila Jayapal introduced the We the People Amendment into the 117th Congress as HJR48.

Co-Director - Legislative Coordinator

Position:

Our team is seeking someone to support the work of the Move to Amend coalition and the advancement of the We The People Amendment (HJR48) as well as other movement goals. This position includes advocating and organizing for HJR48 at a federal level, supporting our grassroots volunteers and advocates across the country on local campaigns and organizing strategies, coordinating state-level Pledge to Amend campaigns, maintaining partnerships with other organizations, organizing virtual events, as well as implementing and improving current and future programs to support these goals. 

This is a contractor position and may claim up to 30 hours per week, which is considered full time. All Move to Amend staff members are paid the same rate of $25/hour and may work remotely from anywhere within the US. 

The position is highly flexible with regards to working hours, however staff are expected to be present for scheduled meetings and events and maintain a weekly workplan.

Note that this position requires living in the Washington D.C. area or within a few hour train ride to easily accommodate trips to D.C.

Legislative Responsibilities:

• With support from fellow Co-Directors, develop and execute an annual legislative plan to successfully meet goals.
• Develop relationships with Congressional partners and their staff, as well as state representatives and their staff and advocate for their support of the We the People Amendment and related resolutions and legislation
• Coordinate Move to Amend’s We the People Lobby Campaign during the August recess.
• Train and support staff, volunteers, and interns on lobbying and policy research.
• Work with the National Team (staff, board members, and interns) as well as volunteers developing direct action strategies to complement traditional lobbying.
• Create and distribute materials for Move to Amend Local Affiliates to use for lobbying their elected officials.
• Coordinate Move to Amend’s Pledge to Amend campaign during election years.
• Work with relevant staff and key spokespeople to develop talking points, messaging strategies, and coach as needed in preparation for legislative advocacy visits.
• Track and provide analysis on state and federal legislation or resolutions relating to Move to Amend’s agenda.
• Work with allied progressive policy organizations on issue research.

Other Responsibilities

• Represent Move to Amend at conferences, hearings and meetings.
• Attend monthly Law & Research Committee call.
• Attend monthly Coalition Call meetings.
• Produce regular reports on progress made toward stated objectives and next steps as part of broader organizational accountability and coordination.
• Assist in donor solicitation and cultivation and other fundraising efforts (a requirement for all staff).
• Participate in Move to Amend’s Movement Education Program (MEP) program (a requirement for all staff, affiliate leaders, and advocates).

Qualifications

• At least one year experience with non-profit organizations and/or political campaigns (or equivalent)
• Community organizing experience assembling direct action campaigns (or willingness to learn and participate in direct action).
• Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and to be able to self-manage, prioritize tasks, and work independently as well as part of a team.
• Proficiency with primary G Suite tools (Gmail, Drive, Docs, Sheets, Slides, Forms, Calendar, Chat), Zoom, Facebook and Twitter
• Strong task management, ability to track multiple deadlines.
• Superb writing skills and ability to communicate in a precise, concise, accessible and persuasive manner (will be asked to submit writing samples).
• Sense of quality control and attention to detail.
• Demonstrated excellence in organizational, managerial, and communication skills.
• Ability to work independently from a distance.
• Passion for Move to Amend's mission.
• Commitment to economic, racial, and gender equity

Recommended

• Fluency in English required. Other languages are an advantage
• Experience with Nationbuilder a plus, but not required

Compensation

Part-time, up to 30 hours/week, $25 per hour
